Welcome to Northern Pathology Victoria (NPV)

Northern Pathology Victoria (NPV) is the public pathology provider for Northern Health, serving the northern community since 2019. We have expanded significantly to meet the growing clinical demands of the Northern Health network.

NPV manages five integrated care centres: Northern Hospital Epping, Broadmeadows Hospital, Bundoora Centre, Craigieburn Centre and Kilmore District Hospital. Our laboratory is located at Northern Hospital Epping and we operate seven collection centres across the region.

Our laboratory plays a crucial role in supporting patient care by delivering pathology testing that prioritises patient safety, clinical effectiveness and high-quality reporting.

As part of an academic teaching hospital, we are dedicated to advancing research and developing new technologies, particularly in thrombosis and cardiovascular medicine. This commitment is supported by our specialised thrombosis research laboratory and coagulation services department.

We offer a comprehensive range of testing services, including Haematology, Transfusion Medicine, Microbiology, Biochemistry and Anatomical Pathology, for both public and private patients.

Test Highlight: Copeptin

The Copeptin test is a key diagnostic tool for evaluating patients with polyuria-polydipsia syndrome. It is useful in diagnosing arginine vasopressin deficiency (central diabetes insipidus), arginine vasopressin resistance (nephrogenic diabetes insipidus) and primary polydipsia.

For more information about the Copeptin test and its clinical applications, please contact our laboratory team.

Medication Switching to Test for Primary Aldosteronism

Primary aldosteronism is suspected in patients with hypertension when plasma aldosterone is within the reference interval or high in the setting of a low or suppressed renin concentration, which leads to an elevated plasma aldosterone-to-renin ratio (ARR). However, many antihypertensive medications can affect aldosterone and renin levels. To help you prepare your patients for the optimal diagnosis of primary aldosteronism, the Endocrine Hypertension group at Monash Health / Hudson Institute of Medical Research has produced a clinician and patient information sheet to help you prepare your patients for the optimal diagnosis of primary aldosteronism.
